THE BREAK ROOM

In honor of today, June 20th, being the Summer Solstice, which coincidentally is also the official first day of summer, we thought we would help you beat the heat and cool down a bit by offering you some miscellaneous fun facts about one of America's favorite foods: ice cream. For example, did you know that Ronald Reagan created National Ice Cream Month back in 1984? (Apparently industry lobbying has been around at least equally as long...) Or that vanilla is the #1 selling flavor of ice cream? Read on for more fascinating facts and trivia about America's favorite dessert.

Ice Cream Fun Facts

- Vanilla is the #1 selling flavor. (really?)

- Chocolate syrup is the favorite topping to put on ice cream. (duh)

- The major ingredient in ice cream is air. (no way)

- July is National Ice Cream Month. It was created by Ronald Reagan in 1984. (another example of compassionate conservatism)

- It takes approximately 50 licks to finish off a scoop of ice cream. (we bet we can do it in under 48)

- The United States is the top ice cream consuming country in the world. (big surprise there)

- According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest ice cream pyramid was made in August of 2002. The pyramid had 3,894 scoops, totaled 22 layers and weighed 1,005 pounds. The pyramid was 53 inches high. (wow!!!)

- The largest ice cream cake weighed in at 12,096 pounds. (gasp!)

- The history of ice cream dates back to the second century B.C.! Many believe that it was invented in China. (right after they invented gun powder no doubt)

- Nero used to send slaves to the mountains around 62 A.D. to bring fresh snow to the royal kitchens. This snow was then flavored with fruits and juices to make flavored ice. (nothing like having plenty of help in the kitchen)

- In 1812 the first lady, Dolley Madison, served ice cream at the second inaugural ball. (but what flavor was it?)

- In 1845 the hand-cranked ice cream freezer was invented. (how did they make it before then?)

- It takes 12 lbs. of milk to make a gallon of ice cream. (that's why ice cream is considered a dairy product)

- The ice cream cone was invented in 1896 with a patent being issued in 1903 to Italo Marchiony. The widespread use of ice cream cones occurred after its introduction at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 and many credit this as the birth of the ice cream cone. So just like the birth of ice cream, nobody knows for sure when the cone really was invented. (but it was invented in China, right?)

Thanks for putting up with CHOICES for another month. Who says we never taught you anything!
