INDUSTRY NEWS & UPDATES

Each year Met Life’s Mature Market Institute produces a national survey of home care costs, separated between non-medical (homemaker/companion) agencies and home health care agencies. The survey was conducted in July and August and surveyed 1,505 agencies in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The non-medical agencies surveyed were licensed agencies, where applicable, and all agencies were asked to provide the private-pay rate, not the Medicare and Medicaid reimbursed rate.

If anyone would like to receive a copy of the survey, please email your request to pdtraining@theseniorschoice.com and we’ll email it to you right away.

Ok, here are some highlights from the survey:

- The 2008 national average hourly rate for homemaker/companions remained unchanged from 2007 at $18 per hour.

- The average 2008 hourly rate for home health aides increased by 5% from $19 in 2007 to $20.

- The high average rate for homemaker/companions is $26 in Rochester, MN.

- The high average rate for home health aides is $28 in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN.

- The low average rate was $12 for both homemaker/companions and home health aides respectively in Shreveport Area, LA.

- More than two-thirds or 67% of home health care agencies provide Alzheimer’s training to their employees.

- 97% of all agencies do not charge their clients an extra fee for Alzheimer’s care.

- Only 26% of all agencies have a 24 hour or live-in rate.

Individual state information is separated by the low, high and average rate. They list data for the largest cities and metro areas of each state, as well as a Rest of State category. This data will be an eye opener for every private duty owner or administrator because it will help you determine where your agency falls in your city or state, and it could help you plan for 2009.

We don’t have room to post all this data, so contact Met Life directly to get your free copy of this survey, or email us at pdtraining@theseniorschoice.com, that’s even easier.

Update on Private Duty 11

We just want to remind everyone that our very own Steve Everhart will be kicking off the 11th Annual Private Duty Conference and Expo, sponsored by Decision Health and Private Duty Insider. The conference will take place this November 17-19 in Orlando, FL.

The Private Duty conference is the largest and most influential conference of the year for private duty professionals, attracting hundreds of business owners, administrators and decision makers from around the country who are looking to grow and diversify their businesses. This year the conference will again be host to a select group of industry experts to share their knowledge on topics ranging from marketing, sales, recruitment and retention, to labor updates and legal opinions on issues affecting the industry.

Steve Everhart will explain the importance of regularly assessing your business practices, in particular the need to take the pulse of your marketing and sales efforts, always a favorite talking point of his. “So many business owners get wrapped up working IN their business that they forget to work ON their business,” said Steve. “I want to instill in people the importance of regularly taking a step back from their day to day operations and assessing where their business really is. When you fail to do that, you lose sight of the big picture and your business suffers as a result.”

Senior’s Choice members are definitely familiar with this advice because Steve preaches it to them relentlessly. But it works and it’s another reason Senior’s Choice members grow their businesses so effectively year by year.

Also, long time Senior’s Choice member Aaron Marcum and founder of Arbor Senior Care in Salt Lake City, UT will share his secrets for running a private duty business that runs without you. His will be the concluding presentation of the conference.

Said Aaron; “I’m excited to be speaking before so many of my colleagues at this prestigious event. Even though we didn’t plan it that way, Steve’s presentation and mine actually share a lot in common. Steve’s business principals and philosophy have been a great influence these past six years and have helped me build my company to where it is today: a multi-million dollar business that runs without me. While I’m still actively involved in my business, I don’t have to be there physically for it to run effectively and this enables me to devote more time with my family, something that’s very important to me and was my goal starting out.”

For those not in the know, Aaron recently moved to the dream house he built several hours away in a beautiful area of southeastern Idaho. He holds conference calls with his managers on a near daily basis, sees all financial reports of course, and drives down to visit with his staff at least once a month to keep his finger on the pulse. But he doesn’t need to be there. He’s done this by building the right infrastructure, having all the key systems in place, surrounding himself with good people, and empowering his staff to make decisions. And it’s worked.

“Aaron is an inspiration not only to our members, but to me,” said Steve. “Through hard work and focus he’s achieved so much in a relatively short period of time. I’m really proud for him and I know the [Private Duty] conference attendees are going to love what he has to say. Every private duty owner should hear his presentation.”

If you’re interested in networking with other private duty companies, want to learn about new trends in the industry and hear tips and advice that can help your company grow, go to Private Duty 11 this November. It’s still not too late to register. Just visit their website for registration and other information at: www.decisionhealth.com/pd11/home.html.

If you were a Senior’s Choice member you’d receive $150 off of any session you want to attend. Membership certainly has its benefits…
