The Seniors Choice
Choices The Hands-On Guide to Growing Your Private Duty Business

Businesses, like people, are creatures of habit. And if there’s one thing a creature of habit hates most, it’s change. Why? Because change brings with it a whole list of unknowns and people tend to fear what they don’t know. Of course, your business is not the one that fears change. You do. And by change, we are referring to significantly altering your current business. That could refer to the concept of chucking all your time sheets in the trash (or rather, recycling them) and adopting automated time keeping via telephony, as we discussed last month. Or it could mean adding a full-time salaried staff person to help you manage your company’s growth. In either case, changing your current business structure can be intimidating and, in some cases, downright frightening. But it doesn’t need to be. In this issue of CHOICES, we’ll discuss the alarming reality that (gasp) your company is growing and that you need to (terrified gasp) move out of your home office and into an office – and (dramatic music) hire a full-time salaried staff person!!! Could this be the end to your semi-functional existence at home? Definitely. Could this be the end of spending the majority of your time on “busy work” instead of on the really really important things, like marketing? Most certainly. Could this be the end to handling client inquiries while still wearing your bathrobe and mud mask? Uh, we hope so.

FEATURE ARTICLE: IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE

Looking back, you remember the moment like it was yesterday – the day you finally decided you were fed up with running your business from home. It was six p.m. on a Wednesday, the answering machine was full of messages from callers you didn’t get to in time, the stack of bills and unprocessed time sheets seemed to be growing with each passing minute, and the smell from the kitchen told you to take your chicken out of the oven now before the smoke alarm started going off. Basically, it was just another typical week for you! But it doesn’t have to be this way. You see, sometimes we need to bite the bullet and do what we know is right for our business. So how do you know when it’s the right time to take money out of your pocket and invest it into your company, whether it’s moving into dedicated office space or hiring some full-time help? This is clearly one of the biggest, and most difficult, decisions for small private duty owners. The problem is that they view these business decisions, such as hiring help and paying rent, as expenditures rather than as investments in their company’s growth. They are so focused on the short term and getting by on a day-to-day basis that they neglect to think about the future. Click here for the complete story.
